Each Tibetan lunar year is ruled by one of 12 signs (one year at a time) and by one of the 5 elements (two years in a row). The combination of the 12 animal signs and the 5 elements makes for a 60-year cycle called Rabyung. The current 17th Rabyung started in 1987.
Since the Losar -- the Tibetan lunar New Year -- is related to the new moon, its Gregorian (also called Western) dates varies and can occur anywhere from the end of January and the beginning of the March.
