Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche stands as a highly respected lama and prominent Buddhist teacher within the Karma Kagyu lineage. His life and activities exemplify deep commitment to the preservation and flourishing of Tibetan Buddhism, both in Nepal and internationally.
Born in 1950 in Manang, Nepal, Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche was ordained at Rumtek Monastery by the 16th Karmapa, Rangjung Rigpe Dorje. Recognised early for his exceptional abilities, he mastered every aspect of traditional Buddhist study, including sutra and tantra, ritual arts, music, sciences, and composition. Rinpoche holds the distinguished title of “Maniwa”, an honour bestowed upon masters of the Avalokiteshvara (Tib. Chenrezig) practice who have either personally completed at least a billion OM MANI PEME HUNG mantras or inspired others to collectively recite this number. Over the past 25 years, more than twenty billion Chenrezig mantras have been accumulated through his guidance. He also completed the traditional three-year retreat under the direction of Bokar Rinpoche.
Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche’s dedication to the Karma Kagyu lineage is evident in his many activities. He serves as the retreat master at the three-year retreat centre in Pharping, Nepal, which he established several years ago. Rinpoche has also built and oversees a monastery for one hundred nuns west of Kathmandu, and he supervises a monks’ monastery east of the capital, with ongoing plans for its development.
Several times each year, Rinpoche leads thousands of practitioners in Nyungne (fasting meditation) and Loving Eyes (Chenrezig) practices at his Nyeshang monastery near Swayambhu (Swayambhunath). His compassionate activity extends to caring for orphans and children from impoverished families, a cause to which he has dedicated much of his life. Rinpoche has published numerous Buddhist texts, and under his guidance, many stupas—traditional Buddhist monuments—have been constructed in Nepal and Europe.
As a spiritual authority, Rinpoche supports both the Nala Foundation and the newly established KKPL Foundation, working alongside the Hi Holiness 17th Karmapa. His tireless commitment to practice, transmission, and guidance of disciples continues to strengthen the Karma Kagyu lineage worldwide.
Sherab Gyaltsen Rinpoche is renowned for a teaching style that is both deep and direct, yet highly accessible. His explanations are clear and easy to understand, while remaining profound. His teachings are often enriched with practical advice, engaging stories, and warm humour, leaving a lasting impression on all who attend.
